Josh Sawyer envisions a 3D Pillars of Eternity 3 inspired by Baldur's Gate 3
Game designer Josh Sawyer discusses potential features of a hypothetical Pillars of Eternity 3, highlighting the advantages of a 3D environment over isometric design.
Josh Sawyer, the game designer at Obsidian Entertainment, expressed his thoughts on a potential Pillars of Eternity 3, envisioning it in a 3D format similar to the acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3. He believes that transitioning from an isometric viewpoint to a fully 3D environment could enhance the gameplay experience greatly.
“That could be super cool.”
“Ich denke, dass das super cool sein könnte.”
In a recent interview, Sawyer pointed out that a 3D setting could integrate various environmental mechanics, such as elevation hazards and dynamic terrain, which was not possible in the top-down view of the previous installments. The depth and verticality possible in a 3D game could enrich player interactions with the world and lead to newer gameplay options.
He elaborated how Baldur’s Gate 3 harnesses this dimensionality to create appealing environments, suggesting that if Pillars of Eternity were to adopt similar mechanics, it would appeal more to modern gaming sensibilities.
Sawyer concluded:
“A third game should be an isometric 3D with an environment more like Baldur’s Gate 3, it would work.”
“Ein drittes Spiel sollte ein isometrisches 3D-Spiel mit einer Umgebung ähnlich wie in Baldur’s Gate 3 sein, es würde funktionieren.”
