Windows Recall Introduces Export Feature for Third-Party Use
The new export feature for Windows Recall aims to enhance user control over captured data, but it is currently limited to users in the European Economic Area.
In a significant update to Windows Recall, Microsoft has now incorporated an export function that enables users to share their collected snapshots with third-party applications. This feature currently applies only to those residing in the European Economic Area (EEA), which consists of all EU member states and a few additional countries.
Previously, this AI system, which captures screenshots of the user’s screen output, merely stored them locally, along with encrypted data management options. The Recall Export feature is seen as a beneficial progression, offering users greater data privacy control and versatility over how their snapshots can be utilized.
As the company describes it, the changes arise from its obligation to comply with relevant laws and regulations. Consequently, only EEA users will initially have access to this feature, with others left waiting for future developments. Currently, data retention in Recall’s system will be limited to 90 days, providing a balance between privacy control and accessibility.
For users outside the EEA, it’s a reminder that while your data resides safely with you, you won’t have access to the functionalities that this export option may provide.
