'Get It Done Quickly': Insights from the Narrative Director of The Witcher 4 on Studio Philosophy and The Witcher 3's Triumph

Philipp Weber, the narrative director of The Witcher 4, shares valuable insights into the development philosophies that contributed to The Witcher 3's success, emphasizing creativity amidst chaos.

Everyone approaches their work differently. While some prefer detailed planning with spreadsheets, others thrive in chaotic environments. Philipp Weber, the narrative director for The Witcher 4, bravely opted to jot down ideas in a constantly evolving Google Document during his early days at CD Projekt Red.

After beginning his career as a quest designer for The Witcher 3, he was later promoted to become the narrative director for its sequel. Contrary to assumptions about organization in a large company like CD Projekt, during the production of The Witcher 3, their philosophy embraced a more flexible and creative approach.

Weber reflects:

“Do it immediately, do it fast, do it dirty.” With a focus on constant creativity until the last possible moment, CD Projekt’s method involved iterating on ideas continuously until the final product had to be released.

Moreover, The Witcher 3 was driven not only by its passionate developers but also by a vibrant community of modders. Weber recalls:

“I think the secret behind The Witcher 3 was I wasn’t an exception; many were driven by the same passion for the project.”

Ultimately, the combination of chaos, creativity, and an ever-growing document of ideas became the secret sauce for the game’s resounding success.
