Microsoft Cancels Highly Anticipated Perfect Dark Reboot, Shuts Down Developer The Initiative
Microsoft's layoffs lead to the cancellation of the Perfect Dark reboot and the closure of The Initiative studio.
Microsoft has announced a significant reduction in its workforce, laying off approximately 9,000 employees, which has resulted in the cancellation of key projects including the long-anticipated Perfect Dark reboot. According to a report from Variety, development of the game, which was being handled by The Initiative, has ceased, and the studio itself is being closed down.
In an internal memo, Xbox Game Studios chief Matt Booty stated, “We have made the decision to stop development of Perfect Dark and Everwild as well as wind down several unannounced projects across our portfolio.” He elaborated that these tough choices reflect a broader change in strategy aimed at reallocating resources to boost chances of success amid a transforming industry.
The Perfect Dark reboot was initially revealed in 2020, and while it garnered excitement, several delays occurred during its development. This situation, combined with its absence from recent gaming events, raised concerns about the project’s viability. The Initiative was founded in 2018 with the aim of revitalizing the franchise, but it has faced numerous challenges, leaving avid fans disappointed by this latest news.
