Matt Firor Exits ZeniMax Online Studios Amid Mass Layoffs
The long-serving director of The Elder Scrolls Online, Matt Firor, announces his departure from ZeniMax Online Studios, following substantial layoffs by Microsoft.
Matt Firor, the president and game director of The Elder Scrolls Online, has announced his resignation from ZeniMax Online Studios after more than 18 years at the helm.
“After more than 18 years leading ZeniMax Online Studios, I’ll be stepping away later this month,” said Firor in a message shared on the official TESO X account. “The studio and The Elder Scrolls Online will be in great hands under the direction of new Studio Head Jo Burba, along with Executive Producer Susan Kath and Game Director Rich Lambert.”
He expressed his confidence in the new leadership team that has been responsible for many of ESO’s significant moments and expansions.
Firor’s departure coincides with Microsoft’s announcement of a massive workforce reduction affecting 9,000 employees, including cuts to various Xbox game studios. These layoffs come alongside the cancellation of projects within ZeniMax and other studios, marking a turbulent time in the gaming industry.
Firor has been instrumental in guiding The Elder Scrolls Online from a challenging launch in 2014 to a thriving MMORPG with millions of players. As he steps away, he leaves behind a long legacy and a game that continues to grow.
