Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Writer Shares Thoughts on Disappointing Ending

Mark Cecere, the writer behind Deus Ex titles, expressed disappointment over the ending of Mankind Divided, stating it feels unfinished and suggests the villain was underdeveloped.

In a recent interview, Mark Cecere, a writer for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, revealed he was not pleased with the game’s ending. Many players shared his sentiments, especially given that the conclusion felt abrupt and left certain plot threads unresolved.

Cecere mentioned, “It’s definitely not finished,” indicating that the final antagonist, Marchenko, was initially intended to serve as a secondary villain, with plans for players to explore a more expansive narrative beyond his defeat. However, players found themselves abruptly ending the game without the anticipated deeper engagement, leading to significant disappointment.

Mankind Divided faced a tumultuous development process, juggling resources between its campaign and additional multiplayer features. Cecere reflected, “We had to chop the game up a lot because of studio problems and funding and all that stuff,” affirming that he understood the critiques surrounding the game’s ending.

While fans hoped for a sequel to clarify outstanding questions, recent developments in the gaming industry have put that possibility in jeopardy as Eidos-Montreal shifted focus to other projects. Cecere expressed regret over not being involved in any future endeavors related to the franchise yet remained hopeful for the series’ return.
