Skyrim's Lead Designer Weighs in on $100 Games: A Risky Move for Developers
Bruce Nesmith shares insights on the implications of potentially increasing video game prices and gamer loyalty.
In a recent interview with PressBoxPR, Bruce Nesmith, a leading designer behind Skyrim, discussed the continuing controversy surrounding the potential increase of video game prices to $100. He expressed, “I personally think game developers would be wise to not push the prices higher, but gamers are a special breed… they will pay for what they want.”
Nesmith noted that the pricing of video games has remained stagnant for too long, citing the price of new titles that has not seen adjustments in over 15 years. He indicated that the current state may require higher prices to sustain the industry’s growth:
“I remember for 15 years, the price of a newly released game was $59.95. For 15 years, it didn’t change. Not even a cost of living increase.”
With Grand Theft Auto 6 looming, which is speculated to be tagged at a premium price, Nesmith believes the community’s willingness to invest in their hobbies will dictate future game costs. He ultimately stated, “Economies around the world are struggling a little bit.”
“I would be loath to tell you how much I have paid for gaming in my life. We’re willing to pay for our hobby.”
