Aftershocks from Microsoft's Layoffs Continue to Impact Game Developers
Crystal Dynamics announces layoffs amidst a tumultuous period for game development, citing evolving business conditions.
Tomb Raider studio Crystal Dynamics has imposed further layoffs, impacting an undisclosed number of employees due to evolving business conditions.
“Today we made the very difficult decision to part ways with a number of our talented colleagues as the result of evolving business conditions. This decision was not made lightly. It was necessary, however, to ensure the long-term health of our studio and core creative priorities in a continually shifting market.”

This round of layoffs is not the first for Crystal Dynamics. Earlier this year, 17 employees were let go to align with current business needs. The studio has been navigating challenges since Microsoft cancelled the Perfect Dark reboot, which was partially developed by Crystal Dynamics, as part of a massive layoffs affecting approximately 9000 employees at Microsoft nationally.
The studio has pledged support to those affected by these layoffs, reaffirming their commitment to the future of their major franchises, including Tomb Raider, which may remain unaffected despite the recent cuts. However, there is uncertainty regarding the new development projects, as many employees linked their roles directly to the now-cancelled Perfect Dark reboot.
Recent layoffs across the gaming industry reflect a broader trend prompted by Microsoft’s significant workforce reductions, leading to major changes in several studios beyond their direct influence. Unionization efforts within the industry have surged as teams seek to protect their rights and job security amid ongoing instability.
