Skyrim Mod Revives Oblivion's Custom Spellcrafting System

A new mod for Skyrim allows players to craft their own spells, bringing back a beloved feature from Oblivion.

A new Skyrim mod empowers players to create custom spells, reinstating the iconic spellmaking functionality that marked Oblivion’s magic system. Magic in The Elder Scrolls has been a debated subject among enthusiasts, as Bethesda has altered its mechanics numerous times throughout the years. The spell system in Oblivion stood out, and its exclusion from Skyrim left many fans disappointed. However, thanks to modders, this cherished feature has made a return.

The Fourth Era Spell-Crafting mod brings Oblivion’s spellmaking mechanics back to Skyrim, albeit with key modifications. Unlike in Oblivion, there’s no need to visit an Altar to craft spells anymore. Instead, a Tome of Spellmaking, a small book purchasable from Sergius Turrianus in the College of Winterhold, handles this task. Moreover, the cost in gold for crafting spells has significantly decreased and adjustable settings can be managed via the MCM menu.

Alchemists in Skyrim can enhance custom spells by infusing them with learned ingredient effects, presenting another layer of customization. For instance, a player familiar with Vampire Dust can create spells for Invisibility, Restore Magicka, Regenerate Health, and Cure Disease, presenting four distinct effects to experiment with.

Similar to Oblivion’s mechanics, players can merge multiple spells into one, adjusting variables such as magnitude, area, and duration. The mod accurately computes and displays the magicka required for the final spell. Additionally, users have the ability to mimic the appearance of other spells in their creations, allowing for creative transformations like frost spells into fire storms.

The Fourth Era Spell-Crafting mod opens up fantastic new opportunities for mage builds in Skyrim, enabling an exploration akin to the chaotic yet structured Oblivion magic system. Players can craft spells that range from practical to experimental according to their whims.
