Splitgate 1 Will Persist, But With Changes Ahead
Despite the closure of dedicated servers for Splitgate 1, its multiplayer features will continue through P2P hosting.
Splitgate dedicated servers will officially cease operations on August 29, but players will still be able to enjoy multiplayer through peer-to-peer (P2P) hosting. Developed by 1047 Games, Splitgate is a free-to-play sci-fi shooter inspired by Portal, having been released in early access on Steam in May 2019, followed by a console launch and cross-platform matchmaking in June 2021. While the game received significant acclaim, it faced challenges in commercial success.
In May 2025, 1047 Games launched the open beta for Splitgate 2, which was quickly followed by a full release on June 6. However, the initial excitement faded, leading to mixed reviews due to monetization issues and a lack of polish. In July 2025, 1047 Games decided to ‘unlaunch’ Splitgate 2, returning to open beta as they acknowledged that the game was released prematurely and required substantial rework. Consequently, they announced the discontinuation of online support for Splitgate in August, reallocating resources to focus on the sequel. This decision has drawn frustration from dedicated fans.
Splitgate to Get P2P Hosting Following Server Shutdown
Recently, 1047 Games announced via Twitter that the dedicated servers for Splitgate will shut down on August 29. Fortunately, the multiplayer will remain accessible through P2P hosting on both PC and consoles. This system allows players to host online matches, similar to gameplay in games like Bloodborne, GTA Online, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
The developers recognized the influence of the Stop Killing Games movement in their decision, emphasizing the importance of maintaining online access for players. To bid farewell, 1047 Games committed to releasing all previously “unreleased, stockpiled, or Work In Progress (WIP)” content for Splitgate and will provide all in-game cosmetics for free.
Community feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many fans appreciating the self-hosted solution. The comments expressed gratitude towards the company’s transparency and efforts to keep the multiplayer experience available despite the server shutdown.
