Ex-Bethesda Developer Reveals Original Vision for Oblivion's Cyrodiil
Kurt Kuhlmann shares his ideas on how Oblivion's world could have been more unusual and influenced by other media.
Former Bethesda developer Kurt Kuhlmann discussed his journey in creating the Elder Scrolls series and how the original plans for Oblivion’s Cyrodiil were much more unconventional. As the “lore master” for The Elder Scrolls, Kuhlmann had a different vision for Cyrodiil compared to what was ultimately realized in the game.
The predecessor, The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind, featured psychedelic elements that stood out, contrasting with the more traditional fantasy themes in subsequent titles like Oblivion and Skyrim, which left some fans longing for the original’s unique style. Kuhlmann acknowledged the impact of popular culture on Oblivion, citing influences from works such as Dune and Dark Crystal.
He expressed that if given the opportunity, he would have incorporated more bizarre features into Oblivion, creating a world truer to his original concept. However, factors, including a shift towards conventional narratives influenced by the Lord of the Rings films and executive preferences at Bethesda, led to a more streamlined version of Cyrodiil.
Kuhlmann has since moved on from Bethesda, leaving the future of The Elder Scrolls 6 uncertain, but he is eager to see the direction the series takes next.
