How John Romero's Partying Style Secured Extra Development Time for Deus Ex

Exploring how John Romero's party habits influenced the development timeline of the iconic game Deus Ex.

In a recent deep dive into the development of Deus Ex, it was revealed that John Romero’s notorious party lifestyle played a pivotal role in securing extra development time for this legendary title. This information emerged during a chat with the developers from Ion Storm as they commemorated the game’s 25th anniversary.

The Role of John Romero
Romero and his team at Ion Storm were known for living it up in Dallas, where extravagant office parties were common. The team took advantage of their publisher Eidos’s leniency, which allowed Deus Ex to receive much-needed production time. In a humorous twist, designer Harvey Smith reflected on how the executives from Eidos would often end up too intoxicated during their visits to Dallas, leading them to overlook the development team’s activities in Austin.

Smith commented, “They would fly over these British guys and they would just get hammered with the Dallas team for three days straight.” This culture of partying would sometimes lead to postponed visits from the publisher, further granting the developers the time they needed.

The finished product benefited significantly from this extra time, with Smith stating that the additional months transformed Deus Ex from a solid game into a classic. The freedom for creativity without casual oversight ultimately paved the way for a title that stands the test of time, illustrating how the unconventional aspects of game development can lead to great results.
