Mike Bithell Discusses the Evolution of Licensed Games

Mike Bithell shares insights on how the landscape of licensed games has transformed, stepping away from simple tie-ins to creating more meaningful narratives.

In a recent discussion about the gaming industry, Mike Bithell, known for his work on “John Wick Hex” and “Tron: Catalyst,” highlighted a significant shift in licensed games. Bithell stated, “We’re not just, ‘I’ll put something on a shelf so the Gran can buy it for the kid who likes the movie.'”

Evolution of Licensed Games

The gaming ecosystem has moved away from simple movie tie-ins and generic merchandise towards deeper narratives and richer gameplay experiences. Bithell noted, “There is that big gulf between the games” emphasizing how the industry has split into smaller-scale spin-offs and major AAA productions.

He explained that companies now desire engaging stories and that many of the decision-makers in these companies are people who once played the very games they are now licensing. This indicates a more thoughtful approach to game development, aiming for quality over mere commercial gain.

Bithell’s achievements show that the gaming industry isn’t willing to settle for trivial adaptations anymore; rather, it seeks to explore the worlds crafted by classic franchises.
