Leadership Changes Spark Outrage at Subnautica Studio as Fans Demand Patience
Unknown Worlds reaches out to Subnautica fans amid leadership upheaval, asking for understanding as they promise continuity in development.
Developer Unknown Worlds has issued a letter to the fans of Subnautica requesting their patience following the announcement of significant changes in leadership by Krafton, the publisher. This overhaul saw the departure of multiple key figures, including co-founder Max McGuire. The newly appointed studio head, Steve Papoutsis, previously worked on the Dead Space franchise and The Callisto Protocol.
The leadership shift has triggered a backlash among the community, spurring calls for a boycott on social media, fueled by concerns about the studio’s direction under Krafton’s management. Fans have expressed their worries regarding what they perceive as Krafton prioritizing speed over creative integrity, which they fear might jeopardize the game’s quality.
In its plea, Unknown Worlds reassured fans that the core development team remains intact, stating that the daily workflow attributed to their ongoing projects is sustained. They emphasized:
“The team that has been working on the game day-to-day remains completely unchanged.”
Translation: “El equipo que ha estado trabajando en el juego a diario sigue completamente sin cambios.”
Despite the studio’s assurances, the reception of the letter has been lukewarm, perceived by many as lacking substantial and specific information on the future of Subnautica 2. Fans await further updates regarding the game’s early access timeline, which is still anticipated to occur sometime in 2025.
