CWA Union Critiques Microsoft Layoffs Amid Prosperity

The Media Union expresses disappointment over recent layoffs at Microsoft, emphasizing the need for workers' rights amidst corporate consolidation.

Recently, Microsoft announced the layoff of approximately 9,000 employees, affecting various teams and projects within Xbox Game Studios. This decision has drawn criticism from the Communications Workers of America (CWA), a significant media union, which had previously maintained a favorable relationship with Microsoft.

“We are deeply disappointed in Microsoft’s decision to lay off thousands more workers, including union-represented CWA members, at a time when the company is prospering,” said CWA President Claude Cummings Jr.

Cummings reiterated that they would negotiate with Microsoft regarding these layoffs and that District Vice Presidents Mike Davis and Derrick Osobase will play a key role in supporting affected members.

He remarked that “we are living through a moment of profound corporate consolidation and disruption,” stressing that union organization is vital for workers’ survival. He pointed to Microsoft’s impressive $245 billion revenue last year, marking a record, and the ongoing process of acquiring Activision Blizzard, which has led to extensive legal challenges.

The announcement of job cuts and the ongoing struggles of union organizing highlight a widening gap between corporate success and worker security. Both Cummings and Davis aim to ensure that workers’ rights are not overlooked during this tumultuous period.

“This news will not deter the movement for a video game industry that works for those who make it what it is today. Our strength lies in our unity.”

In conclusion, the CWA’s statement reflects a critical perspective on Microsoft’s recent actions, advocating for worker support and accountability within the gaming industry.
