Hideo Kojima Discusses Challenges of CG Asian Characters in Death Stranding 2

Kojima shares insights on the difficulties of accurately replicating Asian faces in video games, particularly in his latest project, Death Stranding 2.

The director of Death Stranding 2, Hideo Kojima, has shared that he encounters technical challenges in depicting Asian actors accurately within the game. Kojima’s intention has always been to present lifelike visuals, emphasizing that while some Asian characters are included, achieving this level of realism poses significant hurdles.

Interestingly, among the new characters introduced is Rainy, whose actress Kutsuna was chosen for her talent and bilingual abilities in English and Japanese, crucial for communication during production in Los Angeles. Kojima remarked, “Asian faces, especially those of women and youthful individuals, are often challenging to render realistically in CG due to their smooth skin textures that appear artificial in 3D.”

Kojima additionally pointed out that various Asian actors, such as Ma Dong-seok and Lauren Tsai, successfully made it into the game, albeit in a limited capacity. The director is optimistic about improving upon this technology for future projects, especially as graphics continue to evolve, raising expectations for minor details like skin texture and imperfections.

As fans eagerly await Death Stranding 2, there’s curiosity about how these graphical challenges will be addressed in Kojima’s upcoming titles.
