Warning from Switch 2 User: Permanent Bans Can’t Be Lifted
A Nintendo Switch 2 owner cautions others about the severe consequences of getting permanently banned by Nintendo, sharing a personal experience with an inappropriate username.
An unfortunate Nintendo Switch 2 owner has warned the community that a permanent ban from Nintendo is irreversible and cannot be undone. Similar to the original Switch, Nintendo oversees all online services for the Switch 2 and can bar users from accessing these services due to illegal activities or other breaches of the company’s terms.
About a month since the release of the Switch 2, gamers are becoming familiar with the console and its game library. Its popularity is undeniable, with sales breaking records and enthusiasm growing for upcoming platform exclusives.
Sadly, some complaints have also emerged. One user, Funaoe24, shared on Reddit that their sister faced a permanent ban due to changing her username to “Twink Link,” a play on LGBT+ slang that incorporates the name of the famous Legend of Zelda hero. This alteration led to a strict “System Ban” from Nintendo, preventing the console from accessing any Nintendo services.
Despite contacting support, Funaoe24 was informed that their only option was to try returning the console to the store for a replacement.
Nintendo Permabans a Switch 2 Console Over Name Change
Users expressed gratitude to Funaoe24 for the warning, with many sympathizing with the loss of access to the Switch 2’s online features because of choices beyond their control. Some even joked that the ban was “worth it” for the humorous name used by Funaoe24’s sister. They argued that though the name might have some slang connotation, it wasn’t vulgar or offensive, suggesting that Nintendo’s interpretation was excessively strict regarding terms related to the LGBT+ community.
However, some skeptics questioned Funaoe24’s account. They speculated that Nintendo’s response may have stemmed from potential violations of service agreements, implying the user might have employed unauthorized devices like a MIG Flash to circumvent restrictions. Nintendo has been known to issue bans without warning for such infractions.
Regardless of the specifics, the incident illustrates that Nintendo takes swift action against users it believes are violating rules. While many consider this approach to be draconian, players wishing to retain access to Switch 2 services should tread carefully, even when selecting a username.
