Eric Barone Considers Future of Stardew Valley: A Possible Sequel on the Horizon

The creator of Stardew Valley opens up about the potential for a sequel but emphasizes that monetary gain isn't his main motive.

Eric Barone, the mind behind Stardew Valley, shared his thoughts on the possibility of developing a sequel during a recent episode of the TigerBelly podcast, hosted by comedian Bobby Lee. While he mentioned that a follow-up, Stardew Valley 2, could happen one day, he insists that his primary focus isn’t financial gain.

Barone stated, “I might eventually make a Stardew Valley 2, to be honest… I just don’t care about money that much.” This sentiment reflects his dedication to creating experiences that resonate with players rather than mirroring commercial success.

He elaborated why he continues updating the original game, saying, “It’s so much easier to just add more stuff to Stardew Valley than to make a whole new game from scratch.”

For Barone, the enthusiasm of players and the creativity involved in adding whimsical updates are what truly matter. He further expressed a desire to continue evolving as a developer to avoid becoming pigeonholed as merely the ‘Stardew Valley guy.’

Currently, he is focused on his next ambitious project, Haunted Chocolatier. “I think at some point I’m going to have to completely cut off everything else,” he mentioned, hinting at a possible retreat to finish his new game.

Overall, Barone’s remarks underline his commitment to creativity and passion over profit, shedding light on the heart of game development.
