Larian Studios is gearing up for two upcoming projects, emphasizing the importance of storyline development in their creative process. CEO Swen Vincke shared insights during a recent GameSpot interview, stating,
“We’re trying to make the stories of our future games now so that we have a big backlog of stories available for us when we start on the next thing,” Vincke disclosed to GameSpot’s Tamoor Hussain.
Having completed the final major update for Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian seems poised to dive into new projects, a significant shift for the beloved studio which previously developed both Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Dragon Commander simultaneously. Vincke elaborated, “We’re building a fairly large storytelling team to work together with our writing team.”
His explanation highlighted the difference between traditional writers, who focus on current games, versus new dedicated teams that will focus on crafting future storylines.
The development of a specialized storytelling team is indicative of Larian’s ambition to refine narrative structures and make stories that resonate through gameplay with intricate character arcs and player choices, which remain integral to player experience.
Vincke also pointed out that understanding video game writing is more nuanced than often assumed, covering numerous elements that writers must consider, like dialogue and long-term character development across series, necessitating more specialization within their teams.
The trend suggests that Larian is not only preparing for their next installment, codenamed Excalibur, but is also determined to continually elevate the quality of storytelling in gaming, particularly following the acclaimed narrative successes of Baldur’s Gate 3.
