Ultrakill Publisher's Co-Founder Expresses Exasperation Over Industry Trends

Dave Oshry of New Blood laments the dominance of extraction shooters in gaming, referencing how this shift has impacted even traditional studios like FromSoftware.

I need to confess something to you, dear readers: I’m not a fan of extraction shooters. I never enjoyed battle royale games either. When I engage in PvP, spending long stretches lurking in shadows only to be shocked by a more skilled opponent isn’t my idea of fun.

Therefore, I completely understand the frustration shared by Dave Oshry, co-founder of New Blood, during a recent episode of the Quad Damage Podcast: “You’ve seen the posts, like, Miyazaki’s been playing Tarkov—Tarkov’s done irreparable f*cking damage to the game industry.”
“あなたは投稿を見たことがあります。宮崎がタルコフをプレイしていたことを、タルコフはゲーム業界に修復不可能なダメージを与えました。”

Oshry discussed upcoming projects such as Nightreign and Duskbloods—the latter seemingly evolving into another extraction shooter. While New Blood tests its boundaries with emerging projects, he grieves the current gaming landscape.

He humorously remarked, “Everything needs to be a f*cking extraction shooter—and like, it’s cool, but… I just like regular games. I know I’m not the target anymore.”
「すべてが extraction shooter である必要があります。私は普通のゲームが好きです。私はもうターゲットではないことを理解しています。」

Oshry expressed a shared dissatisfaction over the fleeting nature of matches that extraction shooters deliver, stating, “When I’m trying to improve at a game, I appreciate the chance to learn and iterate. It’s difficult when the action is so brief or requires such intense focus.”
「ゲームで上達しようとする時、学び成長する機会を大切に思います。即時のアクションが必要な時、集中力が試されます。」

While it’s uncertain if studios like FromSoftware will fully turn toward these styles, new experiments by the Duskbloods and Nightreign seem more technical test runs than an outright genre shift—Oshry is merely asking to be excluded from the evolving extraction shooter narrative.
