How Funding Issues Nixed the Sequel to a Classic RPG

A look into the lost potential of a sequel to Planescape: Torment, originally envisioned by David Gaider and his team at Beamdog, which failed to secure publisher backing.

The gaming world knows of Planescape: Torment, a title celebrated for its intricate narrative. Developer Beamdog had a chance to reignite this legacy with a sequel featuring David Gaider, the mastermind behind its original magic. Sadly, the project fell through due to a lack of financial backing, despite necessary funding being available to get it off the ground.

Gaider recounted his career, revealing that no publisher was willing to invest, leading to the project’s decline despite it being a key opportunity. “I remember being excited; we had ambitious plans to explore new facets of the universe,” he stated.

While we see titles bloom in the RPG genre, one can only wonder what could have been had this sequel reached the light of day.

“They were finishing Siege of Dragonspear, an expansion for BG1, but more importantly they were also up to something else: a sequel to Planescape: Torment, for which they had [PS:T lead designer] Chris Avellone on board as a consultant. Now THAT caught my interest.” - David Gaider
