Declining Popularity of Battle Royales - Fortnite Gains a Stronger Hold
A recent report reveals a decrease in interest for battle royale games, with Fortnite increasing its share significantly.
According to the latest findings from Newzoo, the allure of battle royale games is diminishing.
In a surprising turn, despite major titles like Fortnite, Warzone, PUBG, and Apex Legends still being widely played, the genre has seen a drop in playtime share from 19% in 2021 to just 12% in 2023 and 2024.
Interestingly, Fortnite’s dominance within the genre is increasing, capturing 77% of total playtime by 2024, up from 43% in 2021. This shift may be attributed to new events in Fortnite, such as the Fortnite OG event in 2023, and the introduction of non-battle royale experiences like Lego Fortnite and Fortnite Festival, reflecting a broader audience engagement.
In addition, many battle royales released between 2020 and 2024 have ceased operations, impacting the genre’s overall engagement. Developers seem to be focusing their efforts on new shooter styles, such as extraction shooters, which may dominate future reports.
With traditional battle royales on the decline, player engagement has shifted towards RPGs and other shooting genres, while shooters continue to account for approximately 40% of playtime annually since 2021.
