A recent report from Asia Today (spotted by IGN) reveals that four Korean publishers are vying for the opportunity to develop new StarCraft games, aiming to revitalize the iconic RTS series. The companies involved include NCSoft, Nexon, Netmarble, and Krafton.
NCSoft, known for its work on titles like Lineage and Guild Wars, is reportedly pitching an RPG set in the StarCraft universe, which could suggest an MMO format. Meanwhile, Nexon plans a unique interpretation of the franchise, while Krafton is focusing on a concept rooted in its existing development capabilities. Netmarble, on the other hand, is taking the mobile gaming route, which might influence Blizzard’s decision on which project to greenlight.
The anticipation surrounding StarCraft’s revival is palpable, especially given its cultural significance in South Korea, where it has spawned one of the most exciting esports scenes in history. The report assures that “some of these game companies have gone all the way to Blizzard’s headquarters in California to hold presentations in order to secure a competitive edge.” While Blizzard is exploring these pitches, any potential games will likely take years to materialize.
Interestingly, Blizzard has at least one internal StarCraft project progressing, reportedly the third attempt at creating a shooter set within that universe. Such news has sparked whispers of a changing tide for the StarCraft franchise, igniting hopes among fans eager for fresh content.
