CD Projekt Declares No Use of Generative AI for The Witcher 4 Due to Legal Concerns
The creators of The Witcher franchise have announced that they are refraining from incorporating generative AI in the game’s development due to complicated legal issues.
CD Projekt’s joint CEO, Michał Nowakowski, clarified during a recent financial presentation that the studio is not utilizing generative AI for The Witcher 4 or other upcoming projects. The studio had expressed in January 2024 that while AI could streamline certain production processes, they prefer to avoid legal complications associated with generative AI, which can be complex regarding intellectual property rights.
“Gen AI, to be honest, is quite tricky when it comes to legal IP ownership and so on. So, when it comes to implementation of any gen AI in the actual games, we really have nothing happening with Witcher 4 or any projects in the near future.”
This cautious approach aligns with broader industry trends, as concerns over copyright and ownership have led many organizations to tread carefully when it comes to AI technology in game development. As developments progress, CD Projekt may revisit the potential use of generative AI if clearer legal frameworks emerge.
