Ubisoft Implements Anti-Harassment Strategy for Assassin's Creed Shadows Developers
Ubisoft has established a plan aimed at protecting developers from harassment related to the launch of Assassin's Creed Shadows amidst ongoing outrage.
With the launch of Assassin’s Creed Shadows imminent, Ubisoft has reportedly put an anti-harassment plan into place to protect developers from expected backlash on social media.
The game has faced significant criticism from various gaming communities, largely due to its inclusion of Yasuke, a Black samurai. This controversy has exacerbated previous issues related to the game’s perceived historical inaccuracies and mixed messaging from Ubisoft.
One employee mentioned, “We are advised not to disclose on social media that we work at Ubisoft to avoid harassment”, referring to the hostile environment surrounding the game’s release. Ubisoft has also collaborated with Canada’s Communications Security Establishment to ensure the safety of their Quebec development team.
As a response to the rising tide of targeted harassment, the company will maintain oversight of social media activity, providing psychological and legal assistance to employees facing such threats.
Reflecting on the necessity of the plan, a source stated, “Unlike previous initiatives, this is serious.” The increase in online harassment campaigns is concerning, with industry survey data showing that a large majority of developers consider player harassment a significant issue, particularly affecting women and LGBTQ+ community members.
In a statement, Ubisoft reaffirmed their commitment to employee safety online, emphasizing the importance of guidance in navigating social media and preventing harassment. The official stance reflects a growing trend in the gaming industry towards formal measures against abusive behavior and workplace harassment.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is scheduled for release on March 20.
