Ella Purnell Regrets Being Typecast for Her 'Poop Finger' in Fallout
Ella Purnell expresses her concerns about being stereotyped due to her character's finger loss in 'Fallout'.
Ella Purnell has gained prominence in video game adaptations, recently starring in both Arcane as Jinx and Fallout as Lucy MacLean. Both roles are inspired by popular video games, and interestingly, both characters face a similar fate: losing a finger.
In Fallout, Lucy loses her finger during a violent incident and later gets a replacement from the robotic character, Mister Handy, nicknamed Snip Snip. In Arcane, Jinx has her finger shot off during a confrontation. Although the loss in Arcane didn’t require much effort since Purnell was a voice actor, it has taken a toll on her in Fallout.
When Purnell reflected on being typecast as characters who lose fingers during an IGN FanExpo interview, she expressed her frustration saying, “That would be one of the worst things to happen to me.”
She further elaborated, “Do you have any idea how annoying it is to have that finger painted on me every single day? This finger is the bane of my life.” The special effects team strives to create the illusion that Lucy’s finger isn’t her actual finger, a challenge that Purnell finds tedious.
Also, she humorously pointed out that ‘poop finger’ is a term coined by makeup head Mike Harvey during filming, which has become a hilarious inside joke among the cast and crew. Despite the frustrations, Purnell appreciates the creativity involved in such special effects, recognizing the impressive makeup work, particularly for Walton Goggins’ character in Fallout.
