Exploring the Unique Mechanics of Shape of Dreams: A Fresh Roguelike Experience

A closer look at the innovative gameplay mechanics of Shape of Dreams, a co-op roguelike with MOBA elements, set to release in May 2025.

An Introduction to Shape of Dreams

Be still my waking heart. Shape of Dreams is an emerging co-op roguelike that blends in action MOBA controls in a way that captivates and excites.

The game caught my attention as I played through the new demo launched for Next Fest. Shocking as it may be, Shape of Dreams has actually had an earlier demo series featuring a successful prologue. Almost everyone who tried it last year—an impressive 95%—was thrilled with their experience.

Gameplay Overview

This roguelike is described as a combination of Risk of Rain with a MOBA twist, a mash-up that intrigued me and made me curious about its innovative gameplay mechanics. Players can expect the freedom to design their own unique characters for each run while utilizing a shop system that broadens gameplay choices.

The Traveler Memories system—a pivotal game mechanic—lets players select abilities and customize them with essences that enhance their gameplay experience. Much like the beloved Hades, the customization of powers offers exciting opportunities.

In addition to this robust skill tree setup, there are character-specific trees, ensuring a sense of natural progression as you collect resources through runs. There’s also a profound element of fluidity reflected in movement, with flashy visuals designed to keep players engaged.

Shaping Up for Success

While currently, there’s no exact release date beyond May 2025, the potential of Shape of Dreams excites me. The mechanics are rich, varied, and seem to point toward a future sleeper hit in the gaming world, encapsulating everything one would look for in modern roguelike experience.
