Godot Engine Overwhelmed by AI-Generated Code Contributions: Maintainers Express Concern

The Godot open-source game engine is facing challenges due to an influx of low-quality AI-generated code from contributors who may not understand the changes they are submitting.

Open-source software projects like Godot are increasingly flooded with AI-generated contributions from individuals who are unclear about the code they’re proposing. This situation is causing significant strain on the maintainers, who now must assess the credibility and authorship of numerous AI-generated pull requests (PRs).

In a Bluesky thread, Rémi Verschelde, a key maintainer of the Godot repository and co-founder of major supporter W4 Games, voiced frustrations about the overwhelming number of these ‘AI slop’ submissions, which are demanding more resources and time from the project team.

“Honestly, AI slop PRs are becoming increasingly draining and demoralizing for #Godot maintainers.
If you want to help, more funding so we can pay more maintainers to deal with the slop is the only viable solution I can think of.”

Verschelde added that maintainers are now required to scrutinize every PR from new contributors—often multiple times daily—questioning the human involvement in each submission, the validity of the descriptions, and the testing performed. The rapid rate of incoming PRs threatens the very integrity of the project as maintainers struggle to keep pace.

Despite the difficulties, Godot remains committed to supporting new contributors, allowing any user of the engine to make impactful contributions. However, this commitment is being tested by the influx of contributions that could potentially harm the project’s health.
