Indie Developer Speaks Out Against AI in Game Development
D-Cell Games expresses concerns over big studios' remarks on generative AI usage in the gaming industry.
D-Cell Games, the creators behind the acclaimed rhythm game Unbeatable, have issued a strong response to recent comments from larger studios regarding their plans to incorporate generative AI into game design. Notably, Krafton has stated its intention to transition to an “AI-first” company, while Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, has downplayed the need for AI transparency in games like Steam.
Their discontent was particularly sparked by comments from Nexon’s CEO, who implied a universal adoption of AI in game development. In reaction, D-Cell Games affirmed that “Absolutely everything in Unbeatable was created by human beings without any generative assistance.” This includes every aspect from artwork to coding.
“Every moment flawed and messy because we are, also.”

In a chat with The Verge, Jeffrey Chiao articulated, “Ignoring all of the ethical, moral, and legal concerns of using generative AI, it’s a huge waste of effort. We can produce results that meet our quality standards without its assistance.”
This strong stance among indie developers is crucial, especially in an era where generative AI’s role in creative industries is increasingly debated.
