Hideo Kojima Learns about Konami's Refusal to Develop a Matrix Game 26 Years Ago

In a surprising revelation, Hideo Kojima discovered that Konami turned down an opportunity to create a Matrix video game nearly three decades ago.

In a recent interview with Time Extension, Christopher Bergstresser, a former executive at Konami, revealed that the company was approached in 1999 by the Wachowskis to create a video game based on The Matrix. This revelation came as a surprise to Hideo Kojima, who claims he was never aware of such an offer, despite being present at multiple meetings with the sisters.

Bergstresser stated:> “The Wachowskis were big fans of Kojima, so Kazumi Kitaue, Kojima, Aki Saito, and I were at the Konami HQ when we received the call from the Wachowskis.”

Aki translated the offer, but Kitaue declined outright, stating “No.”

In Kojima’s recollection, he exchanged emails with the Wachowskis and met them three times during the film’s promotional tour in Japan. Despite the missed opportunity, he expressed some irritation about not learning of the offer directly.

He remarked,> “If someone had told me, maybe there could’ve been a way to make it work.”
The dream of a Kojima-crafted Matrix game sadly remained unfulfilled, as Konami opted against pursuing the deal.
