As Amazon's Gaming Venture Fades, Public Shocked to Learn It Aimed to Rival Steam All Along

Amazon's ambitious gaming aspirations crumble, leaving many to question what went wrong and why they never realized the company sought to compete with Steam.

September 30, 2016, marked a pivotal moment for Amazon Game Studios, which unveiled Breakaway, Crucible, and New World at TwitchCon. However, what was once perceived as a major leap into high-budget game development has turned into a tale of disappointment.

Various games were halted, including Breakaway in 2018 due to poor reception, and Crucible soon followed. Recently, despite exhibiting potential success, New World was declared at its end. Although it will still be operational until at least 2026, no further content updates are on the horizon.

The Fall of Ambition

The downfall appears rooted in a blend of overconfidence and insufficient market understanding, as noted by Ethan Evans, the ex-VP who stated that their aspirations to rival Steam were misguided.

“Today I learned Amazon had a platform competing against Steam,” a user quipped. Another remarked upon the revelation of Amazon’s attempts: “Amazon was OFFICIALLY competing against Steam this whole time?”. Despite having significant resources, Evans acknowledged a failure to validate their market assumptions.

Conclusion

The end of notable gaming projects brings to light the broad repercussions of ambition within the gaming industry, especially when overlooked gamer sentiments dictate platform loyalty. Although Amazon intends to shift focus to unique concepts, such as an AI-driven game featuring Snoop Dogg, skepticism remains surrounding its future in the crowded gaming market.
