Krafton Plans to Adapt an 'AI-First' Strategy for Subnautica 2

Krafton, the publisher of Subnautica 2, has announced plans to become an 'AI-First' company, implementing significant changes to its internal operations, driven by AI integration.

Krafton, renowned for publishing titles such as Subnautica 2, PUBG, and iZoi, has recently declared its commitment to becoming an ‘AI-First’ organization. This move aims to revolutionize its operations significantly. AI has generated considerable debate across industries, and the video game sector is no exception, especially concerning its growing role in both game development and gameplay.

Founded in November 2018, Krafton made headlines earlier this year when it dismissed the co-founders of Unknown Worlds, the studio behind Subnautica 2. This decision resulted in a lawsuit from the former executives, who claimed they were terminated to evade a $250 million bonus payout. Krafton defended its actions by citing concerns over the quality of Subnautica 2.

Krafton’s Vision for AI Integration

Krafton’s CEO, Kim Chang-han, elaborated on the company’s future during a presentation titled “Transition to an AI First Company: The Future of Work, Company, and Individual.” The company intends to embrace automation through ‘Agentic AI’ to boost efficiency and tackle complex challenges.

  • “From today onward, Krafton will streamline work processes using AI-centric management methods,” said Kim.

Additionally, Krafton is investing substantially, with a budget of approximately KRW 100 billion to establish an advanced NVIDIA B300-powered GPU cluster. This cluster is expected to enhance workflows requiring complex reasoning and detailed planning.

By mid-2026, Krafton plans to fully integrate AI into its operational structure, including an AI-linked workflow and a data standardization system. Furthermore, the publisher will dedicate KRW 30 billion annually to provide AI training for employees through an ‘AI Learning Hub,’ encouraging collaboration and sharing among staff.

In restructuring its HR policies around AI, Krafton aims to foster an ‘AI-first culture’ by 2025. The company asserts this transformation will help it reinvest saved time and resources into product development, boosting internal mobility and expanding employee roles.

While these advancements promise improved efficiency and opportunities, they also raise concerns regarding job security amidst the AI adoption climate in the gaming sector.
