Starbreeze Transfers Maintenance of Payday 2 to New Developer Amid Struggles with Payday 3

Amidst the challenges faced by Payday 3, Starbreeze has passed on the management of Payday 2 to Sidetrack Games, aiming to mitigate declines in player engagement.

Things are not looking great for Payday 3, as it has struggled to capture an audience similar to that of its predecessor, Payday 2. The latter, released over a decade ago, is still thriving with about 27,000 active players compared to just over 500 for the new title at this writing. This persistent popularity has led the studio, Starbreeze, to continue supporting the older game. On a positive note, Starbreeze announced that they are delegating the development and support of Payday 2 to Sidetrack Games, who is familiar with the game’s mechanics and has previously produced DLC for it.

Starbreeze stated, “Sidetrack (previously known as the M.U.G. Team) has extensive experience in the Payday community, indicating they possess the skill to provide ongoing updates. They know the Payday 2 engine inside and out and have already begun work on the next updates”.

The first update from Sidetrack is set to roll out on October 23, focusing on stability and enhancing the player experience. This news should be welcomed by fans of Payday 2 who have long anticipated quality improvements. However, the gaming world will keep a close watch on how Starbreeze can revive Payday 3, given its rocky initial reception. The company recently announced a decision to cancel a Dungeons and Dragons project to prioritize the future of Payday 3.
