Kitfox Games' Founder on Their Unique Approach to Procedural Storytelling

The founder of Kitfox Games discusses the studio's innovative storytelling methods and upcoming projects.

In a recent interview, Tanya Short, the founder of Kitfox Games, elaborated on the studio’s mission of creating compelling procedural simulations that engage players in storytelling. Kitfox was formed in 2013 with the aim of developing unique games, such as the critically acclaimed Dwarf Fortress and Caves of Qud.

Short emphasized how Kitfox aims to blend systemic complexity with narrative in their upcoming project, Streets of Fortuna, which is characterized as a ‘megasim’ that captures the chaotic interactions within a simulated city. Their goal is to encourage players to explore stories through the simulation of intricate social and psychological systems.

“I think these games give storytelling tools back to the people when passive media took them away,” said Short.

This innovative approach allows players to create their own narratives, influenced by the nuanced behaviors of virtual characters. Kitfox continues to prioritize game development, ensuring that their identity remains closely tied to creating games that resonate with players by accurately reflecting the complexity of real life.
