Anonymous BioWare Staff Brace for Layoffs Following EA's $55 Billion Buyout
BioWare employees express concerns about job security amidst EA's recent acquisition.
Earlier this week, EA executed a monumental $55 billion deal to go private with the backing of Saudi investments, a move that has left many employees at BioWare feeling anxious about their job security.
As reported by Insider Gaming, numerous anonymous developers from BioWare have stated that they are just waiting for the inevitable layoffs following the acquisition. One source noted, “Kind of feels like a matter of time.” This sentiment has led some employees to proactively update their resumes and seek other job opportunities, given the studio’s declining performance with its last significant success being Mass Effect Legendary Edition in 2021, while their last new release, Dragon Age: Inquisition, came out in 2014.
The recent acquisition, coupled with EA’s $20 billion debt to JP Morgan, has intensified concerns about potential cost-cutting measures that may impact job security at BioWare, especially as the studio has not achieved a hit since its last major title.
“I’ve been doing it since last year, but I’m making sure I have a portfolio ready and feelers out for other jobs,” stated an insider.
In addition to internal fears, BioWare’s past performance has raised eyebrows. After the lukewarm reception of Veilguard, which was reported to be significantly under EA’s expectations, additional layoffs had already taken place, sparking concerns that the studio might face closure or being sold off entirely in the future.
