Sony Offers Five Free Days of PlayStation Plus Following Network Outage; Capcom Extends Monster Hunter Wilds Beta

Sony's PlayStation Network experienced a significant outage, prompting the company to provide free service days. Meanwhile, Capcom plans to extend the beta testing period for 'Monster Hunter Wilds' as compensation for players.

Yesterday evening, the Ask PlayStation support account on Twitter declared an end to this weekend’s strange PlayStation Network outage, almost 24 hours after the issues first began. Sony is offering five free days of PS Plus (the paid component of PlayStation Network) as recompense, while Capcom mentioned a potential extension on the Monster Hunter Wilds beta to make up for the downtime’s impact.

At 6 PM CT on February 8, Ask PlayStation tweeted that PSN’s services had been restored and apologized for the inconvenience. They later tweeted, “Network services have fully recovered from an operational issue. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank the community for their patience. All PlayStation Plus members will automatically receive an additional five days of service.”

Ok, but what happened? Sony failed to provide any official updates regarding the outage from when PSN first went down late on February 7, to its return on the night of February 8. Without an official explanation, many commenters—including myself—recall the disastrous PSN hack of 2011. Speculations are circulating that this was a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack against Sony. Longtime developer Modern Vintage Gamer suggested that certain client-side behaviors observed during the outage lend credence to the DDoS theory.

It remains unclear if Sony will ever offer an official explanation for what transpired—were I a PlayStation customer, I’d prefer to have that peace of mind over any compensation for the downtime. However, both would be preferable.

In the meantime, Capcom tweeted it is considering extending the play window for the Monster Hunter Wilds beta, although it’s unclear if PC players will also benefit from this potential extension.
