Penguin Perspective: A New Take on Lovecraftian Horror

An indie studio known for Umurangi Generation is reimagining Lovecraft's story from the viewpoint of a penguin, with a new trailer showcasing the voice of Disco Elysium's narrator.

In a new trailer at the Six One Indie Showcase, Origame Digital showcased its first trailer for Penguin Colony, a horror game where players control a little penguin. Notably, the game will feature a performance by Lenval Brown, the narrator from Disco Elysium: The Final Cut.

We originally received the first screenshots and pitch for Penguin Colony back in June, reinterpreting H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness through the eyes of a penguin. The original story revolves around the discovery of an impossible lost city in Antarctica, told from the perspective of a Miskatonic University scholar spiraling into madness due to the bizarre events.

The game’s narrator, Howard Blakely, serves as a new character portrayed by Brown, reaching out to the penguin protagonist across vast distances. “Our narrator is part of an expedition which has gone horribly wrong,” the game’s Steam page states. “Having been called by the old ones, his brain no longer experiences time linearly. Past, present, and future have become one for him. The only being who can hear his cry for help is you, a penguin awakened by a flare in the distance.”

The trailer reveals the little flightless bird exploring an empty, icy landscape, swimming through drifting blocks of ice, and perching alongside mysterious stone effigies from an ancient society.

While Lovecraft’s human protagonists often face grim fates, I’m optimistic that our adorable penguin will fare better. Given Origame’s previous success with the acclaimed Umurangi Generation, Penguin Colony promises an intriguing combination of engaging story and unique gameplay mechanics, though no release date has been set yet. You can wishlist it on Steam.
