Unveiling Subnautica 2's Latest Menacing Leviathan: A Four-Tentacled Horror

The development team behind Subnautica 2 introduces a terrifying new Leviathan that will instill fear in players.

Active Development Continues

The team behind Subnautica 2 continues to work diligently, undeterred by ongoing legal challenges. Recently, they unveiled a new Leviathan, the Collector Leviathan, which is sure to set the tone for fear in underwater exploration.

A Heart-Stopping Design

Cory Strader, the visual development lead, mentions, “We started with multiple rounds of quick, low-detail thumbnail sketches, exploring a wide range of shapes and silhouettes. And out of all of the designs, this Cthulhu-inspired beast resonated with the team.”

This terrifying creature not only boasts a fearsome appearance but also presents a significant threat to players.

Gameplay Dynamics

According to design insights shared during the development diary, the Collector Leviathan is described as “intelligent but easily irritable,” which kicks in stealth mechanics. Players may notice that it emits distinct sounds corresponding to its mood, alerting players when it’s angry. Avoidance strategies are possible: the creature will search for players for a short time, but if you manage to escape a distance of 45,000 units, it will despawn.

What Happens If You Fail?

Unfortunately, players who fail to elude this beast have a visceral fate awaiting them, as outlined by game designer Louis Karim. He highlights that the visual effects during a player’s demise are meticulously crafted to enhance the experience.

Conclusion

The Collector Leviathan is just one of the many challenges awaiting players in the depths of Subnautica 2. With each new reveal, anticipation grows for the release, set against the backdrop of the studio’s legal battles.
