It’s widely recognized that Battlefield Studios has taken notes from past games to craft Battlefield 6, aiming to align it closer to player desires. Notable choices include removing 128-player matches, which did not resonate in Battlefield 2042, and addressing player feedback regarding underperforming vehicles and small maps. However, a significant lesson from Battlefield 4 is that sometimes less destruction is more.
The decision to minimize extensive map demolition via Levolution events is based on ensuring that map destruction contributes meaningfully to gameplay. Instead, developers have introduced a new concept termed tactical destruction. Grass, a designer on the game, explains, “We want players to flank by demolishing structures to eliminate enemies. If everything could be destroyed, the game would become less engaging.”
While complete chaos could arise during all Levolution events, such as collapsing roads and severe weather changes, these unpredictable events often led to irrational deaths. The concept might have seemed appealing, yet it became clear why developers preferred a more calculated approach to destruction.
In Battlefield 6, buildings are still destructible like before, yet the wreckage is now localized to specific areas on the map, aiming to reduce unintended collateral damage to players.
