X-Com's Creator Unfazed by New Game's Divergence from Tradition

Julian Gollop discusses his latest title, Chip 'N Clawz vs The Brainoids, and its departure from traditional turn-based strategy.

X-Com’s creator, Julian Gollop, voiced confidence in the appeal of his upcoming game, Chip ‘N Clawz vs The Brainoids. Aimed at bringing in fresh players, Gollop stated:

“If they’re into the traditional turn-based hardcore stuff, it might not be for them.” Translation: If players prefer the classic challenging turn-based gameplay, this may not suit them.

This new title departs from the iconic X-Com formula, embracing a more colorful, cooperative approach reminiscent of Fortnite.

While Gollop hopes to attract a new audience, he maintains that there’s still strategic depth in the game. He stated, “I think there’s enough strategy in there for strategy fans, for sure,” while acknowledging a perceived simplicity in gameplay controls.

In reimagining his design philosophy, Gollop also hinted at influences from earlier games like Magic & Mayhem, blending traditional strategy with character-driven mechanics.

Gollop aims for Chip ‘N Clawz to stand apart while engaging both veteran and novice players alike.
