MindsEye's Launch Reaction Left Its Lead Actor Questioning His Career

After the disastrous launch of MindsEye, Alex Hernandez, the lead actor, feared it could end his gaming career.

By all accounts, MindsEye did not fare well at launch, holding a disappointing 37% rating on Steam labeled ‘Mostly Negative’. Even with updates planned, this perception seems unlikely to change.

In light of its failures, lead actor Alex Hernandez expressed significant worry that this could mark the end of his career in video games. In a candid discussion, he mused over his role as the public face of what is largely perceived as a failure in the gaming scene.

“It’s hard. I’m not gonna lie about that,” Hernandez shared, reflecting not only on his personal stakes but also those of the approximately 300 employees at Build A Rocket Boy, who he hopes will eventually be recognized for their hard work.

He noted, “I hope this goes really well. I want them all to get raises and have a giant party and have this be the job that launches their career.”

This sentiment resonates amid a backdrop where negative feedback from gamers can be brutally personal, often directed at those involved in the project’s development regardless of their individual contributions.

Hernandez’s experience has highlights the harsh reality of today’s gaming culture: anonymity online can fuel hostility, as both he and his team have found themselves at the mercy of ‘internet trolls’.

After a brief period of self-doubt that left him contemplating his future in the industry, Hernandez has since tried to pick himself up and move forward. However, he acknowledges that the lasting effects of such aggressive criticism can weigh heavily on anyone in his position.

As he continues with his career, he recognizes the challenge of maintaining his identity amidst the shadow of a game that many critics despise, stating, “My name will now be associated with something that many people have regarded as pretty difficult to swallow.”
