'We are subservient to the players': Battlefield 6 has reduced player counts from 128 to classic 64 after it 'didn't catch on' in Battlefield 2042

The design director discusses how player feedback shaped changes in Battlefield 6, reverting back to 64-player matches.

There’s always some silver lining, even in turbulent times. After the lukewarm reception of Battlefield 2042, developers at Battlefield Studios are looking to improve with Battlefield 6. Transitioning from the displeasing 128-player matches back to the classic 64-player format demonstrates their commitment to listening to player input.

Design Director Shashank Uchil stated, “We thought larger player bases would work—it just didn’t catch on. It’s like a band trying a new sound — we may like it, but if players don’t, then we have to prioritize their preferences.” It’s clear the developers are keen to follow player feedback, indicating a willingness to adapt and change based on what fans of the series want.

Even Rebecka Coutaz, the EA manager, expressed a similar sentiment, saying that they did not want the failures of Battlefield 2042 to occur again, emphasizing the need to meet community expectations based on years of loyalty. The team’s awareness of the pressure for a successful return to form underlines the excitement and anticipation surrounding Battlefield 6.

Ultimately, the justification for the return to 64-player matches comes from what the players have voiced, showcasing the developers’ commitment to the community and their dedication to making a game that aligns with what fans want.
