The Absurdity of OLED Screens on DDR5 RAM: A Commentary

Criticism of integrating displays into RAM modules, questioning the necessity and practicality in PC builds.

I look forward to physically shoving my head in my case to check my RAM speeds. The future!

I’m all for innovation. However, I can’t passively accept hardware manufacturers slapping displays on ordinary components without voicing my opinions, and the V-Color XFinity+ DDR5 RAM modules exemplify this trend.

“Designed for overclocking enthusiasts and hardware lovers,” the XFinity+ modules, resulting from a collaboration between Gigabyte and V-Color, have added OLED screens to their RAM. These displays can show voltage, speed, and various profiles during the POST process.

Initially, this seems beneficial—monitor RAM metrics in real-time without booting into the operating system. However, consider the reality. If there’s a display issue during setup, sticking your entire head inside your PC case to read these minuscule screens might not be the most practical solution.

Moreover, the power cables that keep your system running might obstruct the view of these displays altogether, making them largely impractical.

This move represents a broader decadence in PC hardware trends that I feel compelled to oppose. While a screen atop a CPU cooler makes sense for monitoring temperatures at a glance, installing displays on RAM modules passes the point of reason. What’s next—screens on gaming mice? I’ll pass on that.

In a world overrun by such gimmicks, all I can do is shake my fist in protest, lamenting the simplicity of my past builds.
