Swen Vincke Instructs Baldur's Gate 3 Writers to Reduce Scatological Insults

Studio head Swen Vincke urged the Baldur's Gate 3 writing team to cut down on the number of poop-themed insults in the game, which includes a staggering 17 variants of Vicious Mockery.

“Less poo, more Shakespeare.”

Swen Vincke, head of the Baldur’s Gate 3 development team, had to remind his writers to minimize their use of scatological humor. In a recent stream, Vincke mentioned that many of the insults had taken a turn for the worse with specific references to bowel movements. During this discussion, junior writer Martin Docherty noted a humorous encounter where Vincke critiqued the abundance of these themes, stating, “Swen had a look at them, and he was like: ‘Ah. Hm. Why are so many of them about poo?’”

This conversation highlights the balance between humor and creativity that game developers strive for. Critics and players alike often appreciate depth in storytelling, suggesting that more Shakespearean elements could enhance the experience.
