A Redditor's Fortunate Find: An $8,000 RTX 3080 Ti Threadripper PC for Only $32
A lucky Reddit user scored a high-performance gaming rig at a local auction for a fraction of its original price.
Recently, I’ve been contemplating a GeForce Now subscription to compensate for my aging gaming PC, but now I’m considering hitting local auctions instead. Apparently, you can snag full-fledged RTX 3080 Ti PCs for just $32 at these events.
No kidding, that’s what one lucky Redditor got from a “small auction place up in Columbus, Ohio that only offers local pickup.” The item was listed merely as a chassis, and the buyer intended it “specifically to build an AI development rig later since I would need a large case for it” and were naturally “shocked to find out exactly what was in it … I’ve never been this lucky before.”
The auction screenshot indicates the final bid was $23.50, although the Redditor mentions it was $32. Perhaps there were additional fees? Whatever the specifics, it’s significantly cheaper than purchasing a new gaming computer today; I’d hardly fret over an extra $9.50.
This is not your average RTX 3080 Ti gaming PC, either. This workstation is a powerhouse equipped with a Threadripper CPU and 256 GB of RAM.
Specifications
- CPU: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960X (24-core, 48-thread)
- RAM: 256 GB DDR4
While the hardware is a few generations old, it competes closely with today’s top chips in terms of performance, making it a great find at such a low cost.
In the world of auctions, it seems this story is verified, as comments on the Reddit thread suggest its legitimacy, which makes me and my RTX 3060 Ti feel a tad envious.
