Nintendo Switch 2 Patent Reveals Potential Mouse Features

A newly published patent for the Nintendo Switch 2 highlights mouse functionality using Joy-Cons, bringing new possibilities for gameplay.

With the Nintendo Switch 2 set to launch this year, excitement is building around its capabilities. A new patent reveals how the updated Joy-Con controllers may function as mini gaming mice, allowing for dual mouse inputs, a feature many PC gamers would appreciate.

The patent, filed in 2023 and released recently, describes the Joy-Con as an input device equipped with a sensor for mouse functionalities. However, the detailed wording makes it somewhat challenging to comprehend, as the original documentation was in Japanese, a language not fully understood by many on the team.

The sensor is positioned at the bottom of the Joy-Con, implying that it needs to be placed on a surface to function correctly. Additionally, there are attachments that facilitate mouse use, allowing players not to physically hold the controllers all the time.

This development opens the door for potential twists in both single-player puzzles and co-op gameplay. Nintendo has a history of incorporating innovative tech into multiplayer experiences, such as its unique usage in games like 1-2-Switch and Snipperclips.

While confirmation of gyroscopic controls is still pending, this mouse functionality might serve as a compelling substitute for traditional controls, especially in competitive games.

It’s important to note that patents often suggest ideas rather than guaranteed products, but they can provide insight into future functionalities of Nintendo’s gaming equipment.
