Warner Bros.: Challenges Persist as Rocksteady Plans New Batman Title

Despite Rocksteady's plans to return to singleplayer games with a new Batman title, Warner Bros. faces significant challenges following recent game failures.

Warner Bros. Games Faces Turmoil

Warner Bros. Games has had a challenging year, and prospects for the near future look bleak. After the disappointing performance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Rocksteady Studios is considering a new singleplayer Batman game. However, the company’s troubles extend beyond this positive development.

Current State of Affairs

While Hogwarts Legacy saw tremendous success, the multiplayer game Quidditch Champions has only attracted about 90 players on Steam, and Multiversus has seen a rapid decline, recently halting its development. Furthermore, Suicide Squad received poor reception and ceased post-launch content after just one year.

Financial losses at Warner have been substantial, with a $100 million loss report connected to underperforming titles, primarily during the last quarter due to MultiVersus. Additionally, the failure of Suicide Squad triggered a staggering $200 million loss.

Looking Ahead

The outlook for Warner’s upcoming Wonder Woman game, which has reportedly seen over $100 million in investment, remains uncertain. Although it was rebooted with a new director in early 2024, there’s skepticism regarding its future release timeline.

For those who loved Rocksteady’s earlier work, there is a silver lining: rumors suggest that Rocksteady is shifting back towards singleplayer experiences. Their previous Batman games were well-received, and it’s speculated that lessons learned from recent failures might guide future projects.

However, the company has a considerable hill to climb before returning to profitability. “It will take two to three years to rebuild and reset to desired profitability levels,” says JB Perrette.

Quotes “We will get right back to profitability in 2025,” he mentioned, reiterating that immediate improvements are necessary to transition from a loss-making state.

Fans of singleplayer Batman games can only hope these struggles lead to a successful comeback.
