A new RPG titled Quartet introduces an unusual feature allowing players to toggle the Oxford comma on or off, despite the fact that it only appears 15 times in the game.
According to director Patrick Holleman, the idea stemmed from the team’s experiences during development. He describes how this peculiar option emerged:
“It was Pete’s idea. He just dropped a message on Discord that he was planning on implementing it. I’m fairly sure that, at the time, the rest of us just sort of blinked at the suggestion…”
In grammar, the Oxford comma is used before the conjunction in a list (e.g., “I would like to thank my parents, my brother, and God”). The game provides players with control over this stylistic choice, which is presented in-game through a custom markdown tag.
Holleman further explains:
“Pete ended up doing a text search for all sentences with a comma and conjunction, and after reviewing around 500 matches, only about 15 spots in the script actually used them. It hardly has any effect on gameplay, but people care—even more than we imagined!”
