PS5 Digital Edition Faces Storage Reduction in Europe

Recent reports indicate a potential storage downgrade for the PS5 Digital Edition, alarming consumers in Europe. This change may impact gamers planning to purchase this version.

PS5 Digital Edition Faces Storage Reduction in Europe

A recent report suggests that the PS5 Digital Edition may experience a downgrade in storage capacity in Europe. This is concerning news for prospective buyers, particularly since this edition lacks a disc drive.

Originally launched in November 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, the PS5 has quickly become the leading console of its generation. Just earlier this year, Sony announced that over 80 million units of the PS5 have been sold, which includes all versions of the console, such as the standard model, PS5 Slim, and PS5 Pro.

Storage Changes for PS5 Digital Edition

However, according to a well-known leaker, Billbil-Kun, from the French site Deal Labs, starting from September 13, the PS5 Digital Edition will come with 825 GB of SSD storage instead of the previous 1 TB offer in Europe. Notably, the price for this console will remain unchanged in the region. In April 2025, the cost for the PS5 Digital Edition was increased from €449 to €499, and this price has held steady since then.

This reduction in SSD capacity appears to be Sony’s tactic to prevent further price increases for European consumers. Recently, the company announced a price hike for the PS5 in the United States, elevating the Digital Edition from $449 to $499, the regular version from $499 to $549, and the PS5 Pro from the current $699 to $749. Notably, prices for controllers are not impacted by this adjustment. The broader industry has also seen console prices rise, with Microsoft increasing Xbox prices and Nintendo setting a higher price for the anticipated Switch 2.

Moreover, Sony’s price hikes have also affected game titles, as their charges for PS4 and PS5 games surged in markets like Brazil and Turkey.

Fortunately, not all news surrounding the PS5 is negative. Earlier this week, Sony revealed a new Astro Bot themed PS5 controller slated for release on October 30. This limited-edition controller, inspired by the beloved platformer, can already be pre-ordered, although its price remains undisclosed.
