Rust Embraces a Medieval Twist in New Primitive Update

The latest update for Rust introduces medieval elements including siege weapons and an array of historical tools.

It’s a great week for medieval enthusiasts. Alongside the launch of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, the survival sandbox Rust has released its Primitive Update. This new addition features swords, shields, bows and arrows, siege machines, and a few humorous anachronisms such as jewel-encrusted assault rifles and electric crossbows.

Although Rust introduces historical items like catapults and plate armor, its signature style sees these artifacts made from modern-day items like telephone poles and plastic containers. The game doesn’t throw players back in time but melds historical aesthetics with contemporary elements.

“The early game of Rust can be the most exciting; unfortunately, players race to fully automatic rifles as quickly as possible to gain an advantage. What if the early game could last forever…?” - Facepunch Studios
Translation: The initial phase of Rust can be thrilling, but players quickly rush for automatic rifles to gain an upper hand. What if the early game could endure indefinitely?

Players can now construct medieval-style mechanisms like catapults, battering rams, and siege towers, ideal for storming castles in a setting devoid of helicopters and explosives. Instead of firearms, there’s now a crossbow that holds four shots, reminiscent of the dark ages. Horses have also been revamped, taking the place of non-manufacturable motorcycles, making them suitable for traversing the landscape or hauling siege equipment.

Additionally, a Medieval Pack DLC is available for purchase in Rust Prime. This DLC includes the jewel-encrusted rifle skin mentioned earlier, several armor sets, a treasure chest, and more, available for approximately $13 in the Rust store. More details on the Primitive Update can be found on the Rust blog.
